I support this organization’s mission and I want it to have a greater impact on the community.
The Purpose of Recovery is a non-profit organization that I have been working with since 2021. They primarily are supported through grants and donations. You may be aware that many government grants have been eliminated. Please help us to continue to support individuals and families dealing with substance use recovery. Consider donating what you might spend on your favorite coffee drink or fast food snack. Every little bit helps.
My Journey to Sobriety with the Help of The Purpose of Recovery.
My name is Miriam and I want to share how The Purpose of Recovery and one incredible person in particular—helped change the course of my life.
Back in June 2023, I was at one of the lowest points in my life. I knew I needed help to overcome my addiction, but I felt lost and alone. Then, out of the blue, I received a phone call from a man named Alan. We had never met, and yet he listened to me with genuine care and compassion. He encouraged me to take it one day at a time, to simply try going a few days without using. His words struck a chord in me.
Alan didn’t just call once—he continued to check in on me, sometimes more than once a week. That kind of consistency and care started to give me hope. Eventually, on August 14th, I made the decision to check into rehab at Vera Sanctuary. I remember calling Alan to let him know, and he was so supportive—it felt like someone was finally rooting for me.
After three months at Vera Sanctuary, I completed the program and reached back out to Alan. He not only celebrated my progress but also connected me to resources like school programs, shelters, and food pantries—things that helped me get back on my feet. Through all of this, Alan has been a steady presence in my life—someone I can confide in, someone who listens without judgment.
I believe God places people in our lives for a reason, and I know Alan was meant to be part of my journey. As my peer coach and mentor, he has supported me in ways I can hardly put into words. Thanks to him and The Purpose of Recovery, I’ve been clean and sober for over seven months now—and I haven’t looked back.
Recovery is never easy, but having someone believe in you makes all the difference. I’m forever grateful to Alan and the The Purpose of Recovery team for being there when I needed them most.
Sincerely,
Miriam
The Purpose of Recovery (TPOR) is a peer-led nonprofit Recovery Community Organization (RCO) dedicated to supporting individuals and families impacted by substance use and co-occurring mental health challenges. Rooted in lived experience, TPOR provides free, bilingual, culturally responsive, non-clinical peer support that makes recovery accessible, inclusive, and community-driven.
TPOR offers Peer Recovery Coaching (in English and Spanish), support groups and workshops, parent and caregiver support, family education and resource navigation, and sober social events that foster connection and belonging. The organization serves youth, justice-involved individuals, unhoused community members, veterans, families, and anyone seeking support at any stage of recovery.
Guided by a strengths-based, trauma-informed, and person-centered approach, TPOR believes recovery is more than abstinence—it is connection, purpose, and self-defined growth. By building recovery capital and collaborating across behavioral health, housing, education, and justice systems, TPOR is creating a safe, empowering community where individuals and families can heal, thrive, and sustain long-term recovery together.
