The Purpose of Recovery

Bill

Some words from Bill

As many of you know—or anyone who has spent five minutes with me knows—recovery isn't just a part of my story; it’s the foundation of my life.

But what you might not know is that I don't just talk about this from the sidelines. Every week, I spend 10 to 15 hours as a volunteer Peer Support Coach at The Purpose of Recovery (TPOR). I’m in the trenches with individuals and families navigating the hardest days of their lives.

What makes TPOR different? We are strictly program-neutral. Whether someone is in a 12-step program, using clinical therapy, or carving their own unique path, TPOR is there. We provide peer and family support that meets people exactly where they are. We are the crew that helps you build your own navigation system.

I’ve committed to a goal of $500.00. For some, that’s a lot; but for many of us, it’s honestly less than our monthly coffee budget.
To my friends in the rooms and beyond: If you’ve ever benefited from the hand of recovery, consider this a chance to pass it on. TPOR is a nonprofit that provides these life-saving services for free, and they rely on us to keep the lights on.

I don’t just want to hit my goal—I want to blow it away 10-fold. Whether it’s the price of a double-espresso or a week’s worth of Starbucks, every dollar fuels the peer coaching that changes the trajectory of a family forever.

Let’s show them what this community can do. Thanks for having my back.

The The Purpose of Recovery Story

The Purpose of Recovery (TPOR) is a peer-led nonprofit Recovery Community Organization (RCO) dedicated to supporting individuals and families impacted by substance use and co-occurring mental health challenges. Rooted in lived experience, TPOR provides free, bilingual, culturally responsive, non-clinical peer support that makes recovery accessible, inclusive, and community-driven.

TPOR offers Peer Recovery Coaching (in English and Spanish), support groups and workshops, parent and caregiver support, family education and resource navigation, and sober social events that foster connection and belonging. The organization serves youth, justice-involved individuals, unhoused community members, veterans, families, and anyone seeking support at any stage of recovery.

Guided by a strengths-based, trauma-informed, and person-centered approach, TPOR believes recovery is more than abstinence—it is connection, purpose, and self-defined growth. By building recovery capital and collaborating across behavioral health, housing, education, and justice systems, TPOR is creating a safe, empowering community where individuals and families can heal, thrive, and sustain long-term recovery together.

To reach more individuals and families in need, we are inviting you to take an active role in expanding this life-changing work. Our goal for Love Is Giving Day is to raise $30,000—and every dollar moves someone closer to recovery, stability, and hope. Through the power of peer-to-peer fundraising and generous matching gifts, your contribution can go even further, doubling the impact of your support. We encourage you not only to give, but to share our mission with your network, start your own fundraising page, and rally others to join you. Together, we can build a stronger recovery community where no one has to navigate this journey alone. Make your gift today and be part of a movement that transforms lives—because recovery is possible, and it starts with all of us.
